Building Children's Social-Emotional Skills

This is my favorite class of the conference today.

Prenatal Brain Development

Healthy whole development of a child begins with healthy brain development.

While the prenatal brain is developing, it can produce up to 250,000 neurons per minute. Humans are born with approximately 100 billion neurons. Because of the complexity of the brain, and the intricate chemical and biological interactions necessary to create it and the central nervous system, brain development begins as early as 16 days of development.

Prenatal Development Overview

Conception is the moment when the male gamete, or reproductive cell termed sperm, penetrates the female gamete, the ova. When their nuclei fuse, the new creation is called a zygote. This is the earliest stage of pre-natal development. From this single cell, through complex development emerges that bundle of joy we call a baby.

Self

There are four parts to the word "self". Self consists of: self-control, self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem. The first concept I would like to cover is self-control. A great professor of mine, Laurie Arvay, said, "I use the term descipline to describe self-control and emotional regulation. These skills enable children to be what we call good citizens: responsible for themselves and respectful of others."
